View Full Version : Chizik vs. Kiffin

Many fans seem to have their dobbers down because we lost to Auby, a team that also replaced their coach last season. To rub a little salt in the wound, their coach was roundly disapproved when hired and our's got a mountain of media attention. Chizik is off to a 5-0 start and we are at 2-3. Chizik brings Gus Malzahn's offensive circus into Neyland and looks light years ahead of our crack coaching staff.
If you want a coach that has a 8-9 win ceiling then you need to go out and buy some War Eagle bullshit shirts and hats. If you think Gene Chizik will get Auburn SEC championships, then burn your UT gear and head to Bumfuque Egypt, a.k.a. Auburn.
If you want a coach that has the potential to build a program that can consistently compete for conference titles and have a chance to win 11-12 games every now and then, you should stick with Lane Kiffin.
The Kiffin plan will not be quick, but it is a solid plan and it has much more up side than the Chizik variety. Gus Malzahn will be gone within two years and we will see where Auburn is vs. UT after 4 years.
Chizik was left with better players than Kiffin. That is the key. It's not about the X's and O's, it's about the Jimmy's and Joe's. Kiffin understands you have to have big time talent to play with the big boys. Talent is the key, who has gets the best players, gets a ticket in the club.

Yep.
All the naysayers seem to be ignoring the shortcomings of this team where it counts, in the trenches.
That is where Auburn won the game. Teams that start walk-ons, red-shirt freshmen, and converted DE's with bum knees to DT are going to struggle. Not a single underclassman in Auburn's starting O line or D line. Of all 9 players, Ricks was the only one that didn't rate 3 or 4 stars from Rivals.

knows what kind of future UT or auburn has. It's all guesswork at this point. I support Kiffin, I like the staff, but yea, we're gonna have to recruit really well to win--and every coach in the southeast has that exact same goal-recruit well. You have no idea how well Chizik will do: This idea that we have a higher upside than auburn is nonsense; they just beat us, that's all I know and that's the only FACT to be assessed at this point. I also know that florida has won two national titles in three years with the spread, and I know that michigan is now running it and QBs who run and throw tend to be lots more dangerous than pure dropback passers. The thing about the UT plan, and playing pro style in this spread age, is this: We have to have GREAT talent to win. If we have nice talent, and play a spread team with nice talent, we're at a disadvantage. That's my take on the college game nowadays.
It's EASY to say: Oh, when we get great talent we'll be kicking everybody's ass! What coach/fan base DOESN'T SAY THAT. But we're gonna have to get it, and it's not going to be easy--that's my point. So I support Kiffin but I'm not going to rationalize losses away with this "Oh, we'll be beating them regularly" in three years BS.

A voice of reason. Saban didn't resort to smoke and mirrors, he did it with solid recruiting and solid coaching at LSU and Bammer. The reason that the NFL uses these schemes is that when all else is equal, it comes down to execution. It is the same in college. When these schemes are executed THEY WORK. We just got to get the guys in here to do it. Hell, even PHILDO won when we had talent to play a pro=style(I-form) offense.

Malzahn is the reason they are 5-0, not Chizik. Of course, Chizik hired Malzhan, who, I assume, will be hired away as a head coach in the next year or two. Then what?

I think that you have to give Chizik credit. He hired an outstanding OC in Malzahn and a sold DC in Ted Roof. He also brought in other quality coaches and recruiters like Taylor, etc. So in my opinion the future at this point looks very bright on The Plains. Also, as a UT fan, I believe that a strong Auburn program ultimately helps us out. They can help keep Bama in check, and they play UGA every year. We can get some benefits out of Auburn being a strong program. I am pissed as Hell that they have beaten us five straight times, but you have to tip your hat to them at the moment.
And for the record I am firmly behind CLK and our staff. Even Malzahn could probably not coach around Crompton. That the was the ultimate difference Saturday night. Todd played a solid game and made plays, and Crompton had his usual piss poor effort.

im not worried about LK not being able to get it done at all, but to not give GC creidt is moronic. He was successful in the SEC in the past, he was successful at Texas, he'll be successful at Auburn again.

You cannot convince me that Auburn's talent is significantly better than the Vols. Last year probably was truly an aberration on the Plains. Tubs was more in control of his program than Phildo was in K-town. I do not have the time, but I would feel comfortable concluding that Aubie's recruiting classes were better than the Vols for the last 3 years.....

Also important, this is year two in AU running a spread, although this one is different from last year's. So, they're not learning a totally new offense like we are...again. Plus, their QB is a guy groomed from HS to run this version of the spread. Remember, he was going to Texas Tech at one time. Add to that, Todd had a bad arm last year, and this year, he is healed and can make all the throws.
Malzahn will be a HC soon, and Chizik will more than likely hire a spread guru from a smaller school to come over and continue it. Can't see him giving Trooper a bump up.
They will be just fine. We will be better.

Finally someone mentions Tubberville.
Without regurgitating the reasons he left, he was coaching as if it were his for-ever job. A job that didn't come with tenure.

It is significantly better where it counts....QB.

auburn's success is soley because of malzahn. he's one of the best offensive minds in college football. i can see malzahn going to memphis.

I doubt Chisk will be able to recruit as well as Kiffin.

Ghost, you got my point. I am not bashing Chizik or the spread that Malzahn runs. Kiffin's whole success hinges on his ability to bring in top recruits. So far, it looks like he can deliver. If he can, that trumps all the x's and o's and whiffle dust that can be brought to the table by others.
Saban and Meyer also can deliver the recruits for different reasons.

We're not all that good, but we're the best team Auburn has played to date. Let's wait and evaluate Chizik after he has played Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, etc. I'm betting by year's end, the Auburn fanbase won't be nearly as in love with the hire as they are right now.

I suspect you're right. Chizik may have actually hurt himself by winning so many games so fast. Expectations may be unrealistic on the part of AU fans. We thought our own expectations were too high, theirs may be worse and the come-down may be worse. Uninformed people will argue that you can't blame future losses on lack of talent because the 5-0 start "proves" that they have plenty of talent. But the truth is that they haven't played anyone yet with superior talent. When they do they'll likely start losing. Then things could turn nasty.

could get to 7-5 but I would not trade place with AU right now.

Remember, Terry Bowden went 13-0 his first year and it was ALL downhill from there. They absolutely HATE Terry now.
