Re: Wisevol: Any thoughts on the scrimmage?
We have to be careful as fans to read too much into all the information we have at our fingertips.

Remember a few things:

1. The scrimmage yesterday is typically the first scrimmage of fall camp -- our coaches weren't even calling last week a scrimmage.

2. At this stage in fall camp, our coaches are trying to find out which players will be in the rotation and what our guys do well. For instance:

a. We will not be playing 4 TBs in the regular rotation. Hardesty is clearly our best player at TB and will start. Poole and Brown are going to compete in the WKU and UCLA games to lock that 2nd team spot down. Oku is going to be utilized in this offense and on special teams. So you can be sure they'll have specific plays that utilize Oku's talents as a speedster and pass catcher but they are looking at a lot of different stuff righ tnow.

b. Our coaches are not scheming against the other side of the ball. When we go into a game week, our coaches will evaluate film and develop their offensive plan to to attack the other team. Thus, they will maximize the ability of our players to be successful. The coaches can control our successes and chances of making bad plays to some degree. See last year's KY and Vandy games and the disaster that was Wyoming.

Considering the above, it is useless to get upset over bad decisions by the QB or INTs or the like in Saturday's scrimmage.

There are a few things that I watch in a scrimmage that tell me something about our team (but not on a global basis):

1. Catching the football -- it sounds like Brandon Warren has great hands and has moved himself into the starting role opposite Gerald Jones. Considering what a good Spring Hancock had, that is good news if Hancock is your third WR. I like the thought of Jones, Warren, Hancock, Teague, and Nuke as WRs and I really like the rotation when Moore gets back healthy. I also love our TEs, but would like to hear better things about Stocker's pass-catching.

2. OT v. DE -- no matter the scheming, it is pretty easy to evaluate these one on one match-ups and I'm liking what I hear/see from Gerald Williams. We should be so fortunate to have a backup surge and challenge a starter at just about every position. I like our ability on the DL with Williams, Williams, Hughes, and Walker and Orgeron is one of my favorite coaches. To make me really comfortable, I'd like to hear good things about Walls the next two weeks and I'd like to feel like Brown can go 15-20 snaps full speed. I remember when we wrung our hands over Billy Ratliff prior to 1998 and he was able to go and may have made the play of the year when he caused the Stoerner fumble in the Arkansas game.

3. Kickers -- this doesn't depend on scheme much at all. The fact that Lincoln kicked some lengthy FGs in the scrimmage is encouraging. Our punter sounds like he has improved quite a bit.

4. Accuracy -- If our QBs were simply missing WRs and TEs on the field, I'd be concerned, but they aren't. If you have a coaching staff with a plan and a QB with experience and physical ability, WRs who have talent and can catch, you can be successful with a power running game and it looks like that is what we have. Stephens numbers weren't great, but he had 3 drops from WRs.

5. Tackling -- this doesn't appear to be a problem. I'd like for us to look better at LB, but we can't just clone guys. We have to go with what we have and I like what is happening with Askew right now. By October, he may be able to give us some quality PT. One thing that frustrated me in the past with our LBs is that it always took them until they were Juniors (for the most part) before they could contribute while Bama, FL and UGA were playing freshmen. I think we will have some success playing freshmen at LB this season.

6. Individual effort -- I like what I hear/see from Janzen Jackson, Nuke Richardson, Bryce Brown, Poole, Gerald Williams, Askew, Douglas, Shaw, and Crompton. I'm glad that Nuke and Oku are putting the ball on the ground now. And I'm glad that Crompton is sometimes making bad decisions now. Better to address those issues now than later. Crompton may be going up against the best secondary (athletically and coaching wise) he will see; that should always be remembered.

7. Bodies out -- it makes a big difference with guys like Gerald Jones and Hardesty, Berry and McCoy are out or not getting many snaps in the scrimmage. That's why you can't get much global evaluation out of a scrimmage this early. Our coaches right now are evaluating the trees, not the forest. We need to remember that.

The more interesting scrimmage will be the one next Saturday when Jones will probably be back, as will McCoy and Vinson. After that Scrimmage, the coaches will likely start shutting it down AFA individual try-outs and start focusing on getting their go-to guys ready for the season. I suspect, for instance, that after next Saturday, guys like Mike Edwards and Janzen Jackson will be in the rotation in the secondary, but the other newcomers will be headed to the scout team. Same on offense -- Nuke and Teague will continue to get some work while Rogers might see his work narrow some what as will Todd Campbell.

That is when the fine-tuning starts to come into play. Once we go into that stage, if Crompton is consistently making bad decisions or a TB who is in the rotation is putting the ball on the ground or a DB or LB who is in the rotation is having repeated busts, we have problems. Kiffin & Co. will focus on what we do best and start to really drill it.

Anyone who makes any judgments about this team prior to the Zeros on the clock at the end of the UCLA game doesn't know crap.

Wisevol attended one of the Big Orange caravan meetings with his kid. We know this because he posted a long post on VC outraged by the fact that Lance Thompson apparently told his little kid to do well in golf & tennis. He took it as an insult to his kid being smaller than others his age I guess and flew off the handle a bit.

Funniest part of it was Thompson heard about it and got his phone number and called to apologize the next day...apparently meant no harm.

Not the wisest move for someone with the ego to chose that handle...
