*Tiger Woods losing today's PGA like he did is the biggest upset in ten years.
*Top 2-3 story lines going into the season: 1 Can anybody come close to catching Florida; anybody beating them would be the biggest upset in years; they are biggest favorites in years; their depth is unbelievable; replacing Percy Harvin consistently is their only potential Achilles' heal (outside of Teebow getting hurt) 2. The front 7 defense at Alabama looks like world beaters; maybe the best in the country; the offense may have issues; 3 Arkansas will be the most improved team in the conference.4. There are no gimme's in this league from Florida to Vandy/UK
* Tennessee scrimmage: most favorable- offense did not turn the ball over that much; they were not anemic on offense; what will UT do the remainder of pre-season to avoid beating each other up to death; Kiffin has to get out of the huddle and cut the cord; that will happen; otherwise you don't know what you really have;-it's can be artificial appearance; takes away a crutch then requiring the QB to think fast on his own.
* Phones: Hitch-105* degrees at kickoff on the field in Sept; excited about offense; from #105 in offense last year to a much better position this year; should beat WKU 45-3; the offense players believes the scheme they do will work; they have bought into it; they have more pieces to work with Richardson (he may wind up being the best) and Oku and Brown and Jones and Teague (Brent likes him of the newcomers the best)...now many people who can make that 30 yard play....getting a few yards on 1st and 2nd down is crucial; you do not want to put Crompton in 3rd and 8, 3rd and 9 and have him pushing to make the long pass; competition being developed at almost every position is terrific and the seniority situation does not exist...that's gone; the best will get on the field and that helps everybody; fresh eyes from the coaches is good for players who were down-trodden in the past; Douglas is making great moves at tackle and is the future and will move to left tackle later; G. Williams is one of those benefitting from the new coaching regime giving him a fresh start over.
*Alabama- very good and with their recruiting has to be the favorite;
Ole Miss- will be crushed if they don't make it to the champonship;
Miss State- need 2-3 years of better recruiting; player-wise they are still trying to find themselves; LB's are very good;
Overall trend in confeence is for LB's to be much bigger; like having big tackles in the middle who can run; like Alabama's McClain 6-4 with wing span like an eagle weighing 255 pounds and they can run; this is a place were the SEC is dominant
Auburn: Todd will surprisingly be the QB; he was the forgotten man; he was Tony Franklin's man and he lost in the coaching turnover last year; Auburn has recruited some impact players; in many ways like Tennessee; better be able to run the football if they hope to succeed; the depth is terrible; if a main guy goes down they are in trouble; their depth is worse than the VOLs
*VOLS will try to turn the stadium orange for the opener at WKU with special tee shirt offers and give-aways; wear orange.
*Stan: if they can get any type of offense out of the wide recievers and a QB who can deliver, they will have a great run game; the defense coordinators will load up the box and they must be able to make the pass play work; the VOLS will use the fullback more to run and pass catch; to throw the football effectively, recievers must be able to get yards after catch and they have more people who can do this; Oku can be a good cross over run catch type of player
*Lincoln kicked the ball extremely well and Cunningham punted really well; they have to be better than last year in this area; you cannot give away anything free in the kicking game; the old Vols gave a way too many return TD's and long returns; Florida has made a living on returns against the Vols the last two years; this was one of the biggest falloffs of the old regime; Florida's special team coach is Urban Meyer= it's that important to him at Florida; the best way the VOLS can help themselves get returns and start further up the field
*In the offense (west SEC), Ryan Mallek at Arkansas will be the rising breakout star from this year
Hightower (Alabama) will be the star breakout defense player in the west SEC
Chris Walker will be a breakout player at Tennessee and one of the best on defense
Deante Thompson, Florida, will be a breakout star for the Gators.
