BATON ROUGE -- With the media permitted to watch no more than 20 minutes of an LSU football practice, it's hard to glean significant information.

It's not only Chavis' booming voice, frequently spiced with expletives even for the simple task of getting players to run from one drill to another. But the pace at which defenders practice and move is clearly noticeable, and a far cry from the atmosphere under the dual-coordinators setup last season.

Huh? And the supporters of the previous regime allowed him to cuss? Shocking.

And how he'll play the defense:

When the Tigers line up for real, Chavis has promised no more confusion from defensive players shuffling in and out in an attempt to match up with the foes' offensive personnel. Chavis likes to stick with the same 11 players as often as possible, though there will be some situations with five or six defensive backs.

When Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer was fired Chavis became a hot commodity. He had offers most notably from Clemson, a school in his home state, and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Did we know this?

It's reassuring to them that Chavis has a lot of experience and success in defending Florida and Alabama, Tennessee and LSU's toughest annual rivals.

Shouldn't that be "defending against Florida and Alabama"?

A post from LSU fan at Tigerdroppings.....

Chavis' knowledge of Fla and Ala (and rest of SEC) is a great asset. Should pay dividends.

This guy will have no hair remaining in just 4 months.

It's inaccurate to even use the word 'defending' and Chavis in that context when talking about Florida, Bama, etc. Chavis was in charge of the defensive unit that took the field against those squads, but there wasn't much 'defending' going on.

They have NO idea what they're in for.

Haw, haw, since the Beef was shoved upstairs by Flummtard to become defensive cordinator, the Gayturds have scored 423 points against Tennessee. Now I ain't no math major or nuttin like that, but that seems to cipher out to about 30.2 points per ball game. Yeah, I'd have to say the Beef has got Florida's number alright.

Chavis was not offered a coordinators job with Jacksonville, just LBs. I don't think that Clemson offered the DC to him either, but I don't know that one for sure.

Clem's Son probably didn't offer him the job. I believe they already had a better man that they were trolling for who has been, in the past, one of the best recruiters in college football.

He means Florida and Alabama are rivals to both Tennessee and LSU. But how many points have we given up to UF and UA over the past two years?

http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2009/08/lsu_defensive_coordinator_john_2.html LSU thinks they have another Dick LeBeau in Chavis..they said since we never had any talent( cough, cough) on defense or offense it will be amazing to watch Chavis work with some real talent. While I am sure he is walking into a GOLD MINE at LSU...I admit you won't lineup in the I and get 100 yards on Chavis..but misdirection and 3rd and a mile will give him fits..and if LSU if leading by 10 points or less going into the 4th quarter, watch him call off the dogs...I used to blame it on Fulmer..I still say it is Chavis...We will see.

Translation: I don't give a shit if Ryan Karl is lined up on Percy Harvin or Brandon Lafell, that's how I'm going to play it the whole game. :box:

This is another win-win for OM. If he sux, we were all right. If he's good, it's another shot at Fullllllllllmer for holding him back.

Defense, John Chavis, and Florida absolutely DO NOT belong in the same sentence.
