I do not play any instrument and would not pretend to do so. However, I love to hear a good guitar player tear it up, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and on and on.

I know nothing about jazz music but I hear clips in movies, TV shows, and even the Weather channel where somebody is just tearing a guitar up.

Can someone recommend some really good jazz guitar? I like all of the artists listed above and I cannot help but think that they were influenced at least a little by some good guitar players in the past and some current jazz players were influenced by the same folks.

Give me some names of old or new jazz outfits that lay down some hard jazz guitar.

Montgomery and Reinhardt are right at the top of the heap.. Les Paul, who just passed is another..

jazz isn't a genre that puts the guitar at the front often times..

[/URL]Tig is on the money with Jeff Beck. Beck's current band plays a variety of genres including jazz-rock fusion, blues and funk. They have a new DVD out that kicks ass, includes many of his hits from the 70s and even a Beatles tune.

And this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPBqk-0gWfQ&feature=related)

The latter piece is not jazz per se but it shows a rare instance of a rock musician/guitarist utilizing dynamics.

Others to consider:

Al Di Meola
Stanley Jordan
George Benson
Lee Ritenour
Larry Carlton
Russ Freeman

Wes Montgomery is probably the "standard bearer" of the genre.

TIG-Joe Satriani absolutely wears it out. I had heard a little of his music before and I guess I thought he was a heavy metal guy. Listened to a lot of his stuff that is on line this evening and it rocks hard (Little Wing, Smoke on the Water, etc.). The G3 stuff with his buddies would have been awesone in concert. I enjoyed much of the other tunes out there as well. I mostly search for artists on Imeem and there is a long list of songs for him out there.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will listen to all of the others that others have suggested as time allows but it will take a while to work through all of the material that has been suggested.

Stoli - check out Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass. There are greats before and after these two, but they absolutely did it right.

George Benson and Tuck Andres are worth a look, also.

Check our Django Reinhardt too. He may be the best ever.
