I've decided to try to learn this and am going through the tutorial online. But I can't even draw a straight line. I'm trying to follow the directions, but it still isn't working. It says if I hold shift down and click the left button, a dot will appear. No dot appears. But if I drag the mouse, a line does appear, but when I click again and then release shift, the line disappears. Can someone help me out here?

I never learned the shortcut keys, I just use the Toolbox for whatever I'm doing. To make a dot with using the toolbox.....When you have GIMP open, and you have the pic up that you are editing....click the paintbrush tool, and then click once on the pic. A dot should appear. If you want to change the dot size, on the bottom half of the toolbox, you will see "Brush", with a dot in a white box next to it. Click the box, and select a larger or smaller dot. To change the color of the dot, click the Foreground/Background color boxes just under the Smudge and Blur tools. Mess around with the colors until you figure it out. Everything also applies when using the Pencil tool as well, if you want to draw lines.
Keep in mind, Edit Undo is your best friend when learning this program.
