Sure it is a sport. You don't need to be able to run a marathon or bench 500 lbs but some eye to hand coordination, flexibility, and strategy are necessary. I love to play golf but do not care for watching it much on TV. However, it is at least as exciting as baseball, Neckcar, swimming, and a whole host of Olympic sports that I couldn't give two shits for.

why do some of the world's best athletes look like uncoordinated girls when they try to play it (Barkley)?

People who try to make this argument are ignorant. They damn sure haven't ever tried to walk a 7000 yard mountain course in 90 degree heat. It's also unlikely they've ever been to a PGA event and seen in person what it's like when most of these players crush tee shots over 300 yards or work a 210 yard 5 iron hit 300 feet in the air left and right.

The fact this guy thinks Watson nearly winning the open proves his point underscores his ignorance about links courses. It also underscores his ignorance that he's talking about the best links course player of all time and doesn't even realize it.

I will do my best to disprove this claim tomorrow, but then again, I'm not your best representative to do that. Although I will cover more ground side-to-side than your best PGA tour guys. Epic hooks, epic slices.
