I have played links courses and like most of them because I do not try to hit the ball so far as to carry hazards. Links courses require the player to be in control, and just play the course. Do not have to be a long ball hitter to play well on most of them.

Grand Cyprus, Bear Slide, Purgatory, Blacksheep, and Bolingbrook. I would consider Bear Slide and Purgatory to be true link courses as the greens would accept very few shots. All of the courses had lots of bunkers and high grasses with no protection from the wind. Always 20-30 mph and a double always in the making if you do not really grind it out-and at some point the aggravation level becomes too much.

I've played a few, including the one you mentioned, if it's the same one I'm thinking of. It's a muni in Pacific Grove, front 9 is a goat trail but the back 9 is set up similar to Spanish Bay and the other more well known courses on the ocean nearby. Deer were all over the place the day I played. Do pix below look familiar?

Last year while in Oregon I got to go walk out on Bandon Dunes but couldn't play due to schedule. That's probably the most authentic seaside links course I've ever seen.
Another good one I played was Royal New Kent between Richmond and Williamsburg. Claims to be the most authentic Irish Links type course in the US and I wouldn't doubt it, it was a beatch.

Around here I've played the Ocean Course at Kiawah and the Wild Dunes Links course several times. The golf course usually wins.

there's one out here in Salt Lake; it's near the airport and is windy as all hell.
Really fun to play, you have to de-program yourself from how we usually play here in the States. Keep it low and play a lot of runners.

I got to play Ballybunion in 97', it had just been renovated by Tom Watson. Spectacular course, we played the front 9 in a driving rain similar to the scene in Caddyshack where the priest was shooting his high score. The rain stopped as we rounded the course and the skies opened and it was absolutely beautiful.
I shot around 120, which gave me a hard on for links courses. Played a couple since then, mainly Charlotte Golf Links but I dont really like them all that much.

I went to Scotland last year and played most all the famous courses you would know. Turnberry was my favorite. I was glad to see the big boys play it this weekend and remember some of the shots I hit.

I'm allegedly playing one this coming weekend in the mountains of N. Georgia. No, really. It's called Callahan Golf Links and they (the owners) swear it's links style golf. They go to great pains to explain what links golf is and how they measure up. Hope they're right. I've never played one before and am looking forward to it.

I played the Opryland course a few years back which was built as a links style course....it was about 48 degrees and raining the day we played so it pretty much felt like a Scotish links course....
