On Basilio show yesterday. Senior Day. First recruit at UT. Family was down from Cincy. Etc. And they don't play him.

Ryan should have played. He probably would've hit the winning shot.

Ryan hit a lot of big shots for us in his career. He must have really been in Pearl's dog house. I'll have good memories of Chilly.

...on Senior day/night. They might've only played a minute, but he started them. I remember when Bert Bertelkamp was a senior DeVoe started Ralph Parton at point and Bert moved back over to 2 (or "wing" as we called 'em in those days). They were talking on the radio broadcast -- Ward and A.W. Davis, I think it was -- about whether or not Bert could still remember how to shoot since he played point for so long and didn't shoot much. He hit an outside shot pretty quick into the game.
Childress should have played, no doubt. Of course, UT should have beaten bama by at least 15 and Chil would have gotten in at the end for sure.

as bad as he is in the doghouse. Never made sense to me as to what Chilly could have done to get as little playing time as he has.
OTOH, I have no problem with Pearl not playing Childress given that he has so little to add to the team at this point in the season. Vols are playing for a tournament seeding at this point, so fuck Childress. While there is no reason that we shouldn't have been able to blow Bama out at home and get Chilly some playing time, we needed to play to win that game.
It will all be a moot point given that Vols are going down in probably the first round of SECT and NCAAT, so maybe Pearl should just start Childress at this point.

Many years ago, when I was first graduated from UT, I was running a restaurant in Myrtle Beach and our local food supplier came in, as he did every week to get his order and along with him was some little guy who was "training". It was Ralph Parton who I guess was starting work for PGA. I asked him if he was THE Ralph Parton (I'll bet not too many people asked him this) and it turned out that it was. He was a very nice guy and we talked UT basketball for a good while as he played when I was a student there - it's funny what a small world it is........

Chilly should have started and played the first two minutes. It would have pumped up the crowd. Tennessee played without passion and that is the one thing Childress brings consistently. As SFOVol said, Childress must have entered the dog house with no hope of returning.
As I listened to Basillio today, Jordan Howell dropped a nice nugget of info on the listeners. After the Bama loss, Ryan Childress addressed the team and let them know that their lack of effort was not what playing for the Vols is about.

And he was at best 75% this year. That's why he didn't play any, it didn't have anything to do with being in Pearl's doghouse.
That said, we were trying to win a very important game and Chilly just wasn't part of the plan if we weren't up by a bunch at the end. That's how things work out sometimes.

The only problem with that theory is that last year his knee was fine...there was no Negedu on the bench and Ryan's minutes were non-existent.
I remember the game where he and Pearl got in it in and Ryan was clearly insubordinate...and after that he hardly played again. I'm sure there's more to the story....but I seriously doubt that the knew was the determining factor here.....

No matter whether he played a token two minutes or not, Ryan Childress will be successful in his life, a good husband and a good father. What a classy thing to do when a young man, who was probably hurt, can leave his personal feelings at the door and think about the team first.

Ryan not playing IMO is a non-issue, just my feeling but I think Pearl didn't really want RC to come back. Healthy or not or in the doghouse IMO RC's contributions this season would have been very minimal. Our guard play has been our biggest weakness all season.

Non-issue. The best players play, period. Nobody's bitching about Tanner Wild or whatever other practice squad guy didn't get to play.
Hell they ran out to a lead against our regular starters. Can you imagines the outcry if Chill had been in and it would have happened?

And who is saying he's not among our best players? He was good enough against Ohio State in the NCAA tournament...

Looks to me that Pearl says he's not one of our best, and at this point only his opinion matters. This team is quite a bit different since the OSU game and with RC's play last season one could make a case that his game is not as good either.

BANG, let's get back on the topic, which is whether or not Chill should have played against Alabama on Senior Day. Is he right now one of our best players? Who knows? None of us has seen him play much of late. The point is that he should have played against Bama on Senior Day. Starting the seniors on Senior Day (especially one as talented as Chill) is a college tradition.

With that serious knee injury, I'd say no Ryan isn't one of our best players. What happened to him wasn't some sprain...it was really nasty.

I understand your point, but nobody here has been around this team everyday to see his effort or attitude to say he truly deserved that or not. I don't think Pearl would diss him just for the Hell-of-it. There's probably more to it than we will ever know, but like I said IMO it's a non-issue.

I was at the game where Childress mouthed off. We have season tickets section 105 row 21 behind our bench so I got a very good view. He was pulled and mouthed the F word at coach 2-3 times. Not gonna happen on Pearls' team.

I don't doubt Chill's effort and intensity are worthy of playing time, but if he can't beat somebody out he shouldn't play (normally). Now if it truly is a tradition to start the seniors then where's the outcry for the other one or two seniors that didn't get to play? I'm pretty sure they busted it just as hard in practice as everybody else.

After watching him play in mop up duty last night, is there really any question as to why Childress hasn't played more since his return? It was pretty obvious that he just can't move well enough to help the team right now. Yes, he did play well and make some huge plays pre injury, but he is just not the same player he was before the surgery.
