View Full Version : Pulled a Woody Austin & broke a club yesterday

A buddy invited me to play after work Friday. We didn't start till 530 but the course was basically empty. I had played the afternoon before in very hot conditions and was actually kind of tired, both physically and mentally after a hectic day.
So I had been leaving my shots out to the right (which is opposite of my usual miss), lost 3 balls in the 1st 5 holes and was about 8 over (terrible score for me after 5). We'd caught up with a 4 some who were employed by the course and were dicking around. After waiting 8-10 minutes as they sucked each others' dicks before hitting their ball, I teed off on one of the easiest par 4s on the course. Lo and behold, I left another god damn shot out to the right and could see it was the 4th lost ball as there was marsh right along the fairway.
Rather than dropping where it went out, which I should have done (lateral hazard), I decided to tee up another ball and try to work it out of my system. Well I damn near whiffed on this one and dribbled it off the tee box...into more marsh. FUCK!
At that very moment I just lost it. Never done it on a golf course before, not even thrown a club...I'm not someone who has temper issues. But I just reflexively took my 3 wood and took a viscious swing at the tee marker. Unfortunately I hit it dead square. The head comes flying off, shaft broke at the hosel, and it was fortunate the head didn't hit my buddy who was sitting in the cart about 30 feet away. And of course it was one of my favorite clubs that I'd played for 6+ years.
I post this because it's an illustration of how frustrating the game can be, especially if you aren't mentally or physically prepared to play. What made it all the more frustrating was that I'd come within 2 strokes of my personal best the afternoon before. :rotfl:

The heat will do that to you. Dehydration slows the brain functions down to where you cant perform at all.
I got hold of a blazing hot steam pipe Friday afternoon. Said a few choice words.
Did you damage the head of the club?

I broke my 7 iron last week while hitting a ball. It is the 2nd iron I have broken hitting a shot. It was an extremely weird sound and sight to hear steel snapping in half.

I cant remember how many clubs I've thrown, broken, etc.
Coupla years ago bought me a brand new Nike and had it equipped with a Fujikura speeder shaft, and for a month did nothing but duck hook the muthafucka right. Hit one one day that almost went behind me and slammed the fucker into the ground and snapped it in half and threw the clubhead in the lake.
Tried to hit a knockdown shot one time from behind some trees, hit a tree with the ball, it came flying back at my head barely missing it, and I threw the club at the tree and broke it.
Went for broke one day and tried to throw my entire bag into the river but was tackled by my father as I had it raised above my head preparing to heave.
Thrown a shitload of clubs into the air and in various directions off the tee. Before I semi-retired from playing the 3 guys I usually played with learned that when I was going bad that no matter what, I always teed off last and they got as far from the box as possible, which of course pissed me off even more when I hit a bad shot as they jeered from afar out of club throwing range.
Golf is fun.

My favorite was my old Sand Wedge. I could chunk that sucker forever. It NEVER broke.
One day I saw a former coach of mine playing alone on a near hole. He hit a bad shot and threw his club. I said "Hell Cicle you cant throw worth a damn". " I can outthrow you by 30 yards". He was not amused. Which was exzactly what I was hoping for.

is an art form....I know I wrote the book......back in the day when I played 130 rounds or more per year and took the game way to serious I broke on average 10 clubs per year....not bragging, just facts.....the pro-shop kept extra shafts on hand just for my ass.....Played for way to much money in those days and golf was in my system like dope in a druggie...Now I play 7-8 rounds a year and just enjoy the day........for the most part that is...

when I had to be Tiger fookin Woods and play a ball in between a couple of tree roots. Was just trying to punch it out into the fairway but that SOB 8 iron snapped like a toothpick....steel shaft and all. You know that is the strangest feeling when the club all of a sudden feels so light.
Still can't get over the fact that that tee marker was the only thing I hit square in the sweetspot all day. :rotfl:
That turned out to be a $180 temper tantrum, as that's what the 3 wood I bought yesterday to replace it cost.

learned my lesson the hard way, broke a wedge. Stop getting mad at clubs, then over the years, I got tired of being the amusement for everyone else when I golfed, and stopped letting my emotions get away from me. I took over ten strokes, from my game by only worrying about the shot I have in front of me.

Hello, my name is Ryno, and I, too, broke my 3-wood on a tee marker.
Crowd shouts, "Hi, Ryno!"
I have to tell you, breaking that cheating, lying 3-wood felt great. We got off to a great start, and then, slowly, she turned on me. Went from a dependable, do-it-all club to a leaking, slicing hussy.
Just want to say that I'm in a great relationship now with a Taylormade V-Steel 3-wood that so far does everything I ask of her. Life is good...until she cheats on me. I still keep my eye open for my next 3-wood, just in case.
