.......I was reading Bassillo's blog and he said that w/o Coach O and Monte (especially Monte) Kiff doesn't get the job.

Not just Bass but I get tired of hearing this cause the way I remember it, Kiff got the job, THEN talked Monte into coming to UT. Monte was at the Bucs who he loved and loved the owners who had treated him great. Monte had to think about it, a lot and said he woulnd't have came to just any ole college coaching job, it had to be THE college coaching job. UT had everything Monte was looking for, weather, tradition, zealous fans and most importanly, the ability to win a MNC.

And then they had to go get Ed O, whos was getting TONS more money offered to come to LSU, his home state! They literally had to "go get him" at his house....Lane had to secretly get his address and show up at his door. Ed wanted to be back in the SEC and said that he really wanted to be back with Lane.

Do you really think poppa Kiff would have left the Bucs for say Michigan State?

Do you really think Yar Yar would turned down the LSwho job for say, Clem's son?

Kiff said getting those 2 were the biggest recruits he's ever and will have landed.

Now you can say that Mikey H. took a gamble on Kiff and Kiff told Mikey that "hey, i think i can get my dad and Ed O up here..." and Mike took a gamble on the fact that he could, or maybe get one out the 2 or even none. I beleive that more than the first scenario. And even at that, Kiffin did a helluva job on closing Mike Hamilton on getting him to hire him on a "I beleive I can get them" clause.

Totally agree with your post. For some reason, Bas-sillyo can't let it go and he just must rehash his friggin opinion at one or two week intervals. He is, of course, wrong, but he won't let that get in his way now will he?
I will add that in almost every other area, he has been very supportive of CLK and seems to feel that the program is in good hands now.

It's not just Bass, i just happening to reading his blog and that thought popped in my head but a lot of other (UT) writers say the same. I completley understand how rival fans/posters and writers from rival cities say "ya'll wouldna got kiff if it weren't for his daddy and Oregron coming with , it was a package deal" I can see those people saying that out of hate/fear and trying to sell papers. I can even see UT beat writers that loved Fulmer and were still bitter about his firing early on...but now that the dust has settled and we're a bit farther along in the process, i don't see how anybody that follows the program could honestly beleive that Monte and Kiff were a package deal...that it was a done deal when Mikey said "ur hired".....or said "Y'all are hired"

It really doesn't matter how he got the job now. Given what we know now about how he has done his job, there would have been little real resistence to his hiring last fall. If his record reflects the work he has done, the naysayers will go silently into the night.

...every coach sells themself on something...their contacts, their experience, their whatever. As I recall, that was something they mentioned about Saban when he was hired at bama: the ability to draw top notch coaches.

He also hired Chaney and Gran, to name a few...those are top notch coaches.

Kiffin had a plan, and apparently a plan specific to UT. That's what got him hired - his preparation (among other things).

kiffin came prepared with a formal business plan and a priority list of name candidates for assistants. It helped his cause that he was willing to take less money, and marketing UT was part of the plan. Bhrilliant.

Kiffin had a plan, but without Monte he would not have gotten the job offer. I believe that is true. The rest of the staff was not a certainty but CLK was hired on the plan to get them.

Monte was not a guarantee. Coming in with a plan got him the job. His plan was well laid out, Hammy bought in and took the chance. NO ONE could possibly have been guaranteed, much less the ones we got.

Kiffin is catching more shit from the rest of the world than he deserves and it is time he starts getting supported by alumni and Vol fans. As an alum, I back his ass as the head coach, and NO, he did not get the job because of daddy- or we would have gone after daddy. Common sense goes a long way if applied.

Naper, you are sooo right. How could Lane guarantee Hammy that Monte would take a big pay cut just to come to UT. Hammy hired Lane on Lane's presentation and not some pie in the sky, maybe, might happen promises from Lane.
