Anybody got any ideas on where the wife and I can go? I'm wanting to drive and would like to stay within 3 or 4 hours of Chattanooga. Our last little two day trip was up to Bryson City, NC for the 4th of July. Had a great time there.

You might like Townsend, TN about 2.5 hours from Chattanooga.

Florence Alabama: for the Helen Keller home, for the only Frank Lloye Wright house designed for the Tennessee River, and to the north for the Shilloh Battlefield.

Fall Creek Falls state park in Tennessee.

(Have you done the day trip up to Copper Hill Tennesse and seen the museaum there? Done the rafting on the Ocoee?)

A bit farther away:

For later in the year Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill Kentucky.

Salem Village in Winston Salem NC.

If you dont want to spend much money, Fall Creek Falls is great.

Wife and I went for a couple of days last month. If you like dabbling around with photography, it's great. The waterfalls are gorgeous, and if you like to hike (not too much, just a little); again, it's great.

The lodging is not too bad, either. Excellent for a state park. I've never stayed in any of the cabins, so cant say much about them except for what you can see driving by. From that perspective, well...I'd much rather stay in the cabins off the water as opposed to the ones ON it (literally) as those looked a little run down.

Stayed in the hotel last month. Was like $50 a night or so, think the total for a Fri/Sat in a room was just over 100. Bad side: the only food available is in the State Park restaurant. It's not really that it's bad, the service was good and the buffet (like 8 bucks for breakfast, 11 for dinner) was much better than I expected. But, you know...it's a buffet. If you want anything with any quality, rent a cabin and bring everything you need to cook it yourself.

Also: it's in the middle of bumfuck nowhere. This is either good or bad. I mean, you arent going to have shit to do at night except watch TV (and the motel TV kinda sucks). So it's good if you want to go with the whole family and actually spend some time together; or if you dont want to take the whole family and spend some different quality time. Bad if you want to do anything else. Except maybe drink (note: bring your own). My Iphone only had service at the Inn (just pointing that out, too...again it's either good or bad depending on what you want to do on your trip).

Now, if you DONT mind spending some money, go to Highlands North Carolina.

Stay Here: http://www.oldedwardsinn.com/lodge/lodge_amenities.htm

Eat Here: http://www.paoletti-nc.com/

Dont bring the whole family, just the significant other. Bring Viagra if necessary.

Pay off the balance on your credit card before you get there. Dont worry, it will be back to normal when you leave.

Hey!

Any of you MonVOLians hit Fall Creek Falls drop me a line, I'm right off the mountain from there. Zip's right, there ain't a whole lot to do around here.

But to be honest, a lot of ya'll have prolly been to Fall Creek Falls more than I have, I can't remember going but once or twice in my life.

If you're looking to go in the spring you could do Keenland during the spring meet (April), take in the Kentucky Horse Park, go to the Shaker Village as previously mentioned, and tour any number of distilleries making bourban. There are several good places to eat there and to save a few bucks to spend on the ponies stay about 15 minutes north in Georgetown.
