If this guy can play with that kind of fire, we need to be BEGGING him to come back on! This is the proudest I have ever been of Chase since he has been at Tennessee. Way to make a name for yourself, young man! Keep that fire in your belly!

#97 (Chase Nelson) immediately as the guy who punched someone and then ran away as other players swarmed in and ghetto stomped the patron Nelson knocked down.

BV2,
Please plain this to me. How does a guy make it all the way to his senior year eligible and then get ineligible when he probably could be close to a degree by this time next year? Unfrigginbelievable. Chase probably passed the hardest lick of his career when he threw that guided muscle the other night/morning.
That may be the saving grace for Hughes. But there is still the matter of the kicking outside to be dealt with. I'm guessing charges coming tomorrow or Thursday at the latest.
Add: Who is this punk, Gary Russell, and why was he being served alcohol if he is only 20. Also, why would a punk named Gary Russell decide to take on two or three of the biggest human beings in Knoxville?? From govolsxtra.com:

KNOXVILLE - A University of Tennessee football player who previously had not been connected to the weekend bar brawl involving a number of UT players is accused of starting the initial fight, according to a Knoxville police incident report released today.
Chase Nelson, 22, started a fight with 20-year-old bar patron Gary Russell inside Bar Knoxville, 1820 Cumberland Ave., just before 2 a.m. Friday, Russell alleges in a statement to the Knoxville Police Department.
The fight quickly escalated as several more patrons became involved before it spilled outside onto the sidewalk, where an off-duty Knoxville police officer was knocked unconscious when he attempted to intervene.
No one has yet been arrested or charged in the attack on Russell or the subsequent assault against KPD Officer Robert Capouellez. The police investigation is continuing.
Nelson, a senior defensive tackle from Tusla, Okla., has been serving an academic suspension since the end of the spring semester and has not taken part in any team activities, a UT Athletic Department spokesman said today.

Fuck him and his sorry Oklahoma ass. This worthless piece of shit comes and sucks up a scholly for 4 years then when he's really needed not only does he not do crap in spring practice, he also flunks out of school and starts a melee that cost us a solid 4* starter at SS, and possibly one or two additional DTs who CAN actually play, not to mention out best young LB.
Has one player ever caused this much damage?
Eric Locke - not even close.
Nuke Richardson - nope.
Tony McDaniel - don't think so.
Anyone?

Looking at it from a totally selfish perspective, this is good news if true. It doesn't sound like Hughes was involved. He wasn't one of the players suspended by Dooley, and he wasn't fingered by witnesses as the "puncher." Given that Walls and King have been suspended by Dooley, they must have played some role in this incident. Their fate may depend on the charges, if any, that they face from the police.

Maybe Gary Russell wants to be another Corey Zickefoose and blame a player whose not on the team anymore so everything will be OK.

Did I miss something or has anyone even been accused of punching the cop, at least to the point of unconsciousness? I thought maybe he might have fallen down (or was knocked down or shoved down, who knows?) and hit his head on the ground which knocked him out. The kicking after he was down was obviously no accident but is it known whether he was punched down or what?

But according to a UT Athletic Department official who declined to be identified because of an ongoing investigation, an internal review showed Nelson wasn’t even present the night of the brawl.
Which takes us back to square 1, whatever that is.

Did anyone notice that Chase Nelson was no longer a part of the team?
I wonder if anyone knew....

Ok, then its done. An Ommy goes to whoever can fabricate 7-10 Chase Nelson masks for the boys to wear in the lineup whenever the cop wakes up.

This is worst than a coaching search. You have so many different stories. INCREDIBLE!

Damn fine piece of journalism there by Chris.
That said, I'd imagine a defense attorney would be all over the veracity of the recollections of a guy who got pummeled to that degree.

That account more or less matches the bouncer's account I posted the other day. The fact that it looks like neither Russell nor the bouncer had been drinking may weigh heavily in their favor should any of this make it to trial. Low did not make it clear whether any tests for alcohol were done on Russell but trying to get at the meaning of what he wrote I think he was trying to say Russell was sober.
If you can parse this mess Low wrote then you are a better man than I;
"and there was nothing on the toxicology report indicating that he'd been tested for blood-alcohol content or had alcohol in his system."
If we wasn't tested then what sort of report are we talking about? Of course there would be nothing on the report if he weren't tested. If Low is trying to say he was tested and there was no alcohol present then he fucked that up too because he also said Russell wasn't tested in the same sentence.
Apparently no one bothers to edit this shit.
I guess the pieces are falling together. Guesses so far...
Rogers - in least trouble. Probably slow to respond to command or mouthy
King - allegedly admits throwing first punch in defense of Montori
Myles - running away, albeit slowly, and then hitting a UTPD officer
Hughes - most likely assault on Russell?
Walls - Unknown for sure. Kicked and/or hit off duty cop? I arrive at this simply by process of elimination. My guess is Walls knocked him out and someone else kicked him
Moore - participated in assault on Russell. Interesting that Russell mentions Moore and not King. 2-3 independent accounts of 6-7 of our guys beating Russell while on ground inside the bar. Moore likely in that group.
Nelson - not at bar... busy being useless to the team in other ways
Brown - ?
Jackson - some reports state he did not run but was choked out by a bouncer before the action got going fully. Anyway, not hearing good things about his behavior in several areas outside of this incident... all just rumors though.
Best case is if it can be made to seem plausible Hughes was hit first then Hughes and the guys inside may get off. It is hard to see how King gets a suspension if he were merely defending a team mate. 7 guys attacking one on the ground... at some point it changes from defense to assault.
Whoever punched and kicked the cop is going down if the police can figure out who it was. This part is still the greatest mystery. Walls lawyering up makes him a prime candidate along with the fact that he has been suspended for something and no other role has yet been ascribed to him.
The stories of the bouncer, owner and patron all match pretty closely. They saw different parts of the incident but where they overlap they match. The cop or one of the witnesses outside will remember what happened there.
Frankly, I am not buying any of the self-defense BS at this point. Too much violence poured out in too many directions from too many players. The situation is chaotic enough that there will be reasonable doubt but at this point the preponderance of the evidence points to our guys acting like a bunch of thugs.
