It took a while for me to say something good about him. I especially wondered about him after the question he asked DD at his press conference to take the job.I loved his comments today on the show. He admitted that he wantshave all these actions covered up. He wants to win this year and there is no way we can win if we lose these tackles. He said kicking 5 stars of the team don't change anything anyway. Pointed out that Pearl has kicked off a 5 star every year but the culture has changed. He says he's not going to feel better about his team because they kick certain people off. He says what makes him feel good about his team is winning and winning only. I kind of admired his honesty. Deep down, isn't this how 90% of us feel?

Not me. I'm sick of being embarrassed off the field. Fair or not we have this reputation of being a thug school. I hate it.

I want to win. But I want us to clean up our program even more. Sweeping this under the rug is the worst thing that can happen because it maintains the status quo. Here we have an opportunity to send a loud and clear message to those who value their membership on the team. I thinks it's bullshit to call OUR players thugs. They'll listen if the message isn't muddled. We recruit the same kids that everyone else does, even holier-than-thou Vandy. Our athletes are no better or worse than Florida's or Alabama's or anyone else's. People, especially young, inexperienced folks, do things they regret. These same so-called thugs probably go out of their way to visit sick kids in the hospital. They used piss poor judgment on Thursday night. When the smoke clears, there are going to be casualties. But this needs to be a learning experience for those who tenuously remain student athletes at the University of Tennessee.

Personally, I think the guy is an immature idiot. He asked the goofy question at the press conference that Dooley shot down, and he is helping Basillio raise money for this silly Kiffin billboard. To your larger question, I would rather see Dooley clean up the mess now, even if it costs us games. I do believe that discipline (which involves kicking some bad seeds off) does change the culture in the long run. In a best case scenario, we are only going to be a 7-5 type of team anyway. If Dooley lays down the law now, then I think we will be better off a year or two down the road.

I'm all for removing "bad seeds". However, none of us on this board really know which of these kids is a "bad seed" and which ones just made a dumb mistake. Getting into a fight...not necessarily a "bad seed". Beyond that, some kids can be reformed. As the coach, Dooley will have to assess that with each young man. Some people are currently "bad seeds" but have it in them to change.

Here is what I want to know.
Do these incidents happen any more frequently here than at our peer institutions?
Do the same type of incidents get more coverage here?
Are more incidents covered up elsewhere?
These are a few of the things we would have to know before we can put things in the proper perspective and see just what the nature of the problem is.
Just look around the league and there are shootings, DUI's, robberies etc... one program even had a guy dealing massive amounts of cocaine out of his dorm room if I remember correctly. So it may not be any worse here than anywhere else. Even Vandy had something really bad happen in the last year or so but I can't remember the details (it's Vandy so why bother remembering)... and they don't even recruit SEC level football players, let alone elite ones with questionable backgrounds.
Someone needs to do a study controlling for certain variables and see if they can tease out a connection. As much money as we are wasting on research I think someone could do a fairly decent master's thesis on this.
Here is a good link (http://www.sportsargumentwiki.com/index.php?title=Fulmer_Cup) to get things started.

I never suggested that I know who the bad seeds are, or know which ones need to be removed from the team. According to the original post, this Alex guy on Basilio's show was making the claim that kicking players off the team does nothing to change the culture, and that incidents such as these should be covered up. I disagree with that. I think you can change the culture of the football program by not tolerating certain kinds of behavior, and culling the herd if necessary. I don't know what he is going to do with the other players involved in this incident, and he is in the best position to make that decision. However, I don't believe he will keep a guy around solely to win an extra game or two this year, which is essentially what Alex is arguing.

For the record, Alabama arrests have declined dramatically under Saban. When Jeremy Elder was arrested for robbery almost 30 months ago, Saban promptly kicked him off. Then Jimmy Johns was arrested 2 years ago. Since then, the only player arrested was a year ago, Courtney Upshaw and girlfriend both arrested on misdemeanor domestic violence charges. There have been no arrests since. That's one misdemeanor arrest in a little over two years. To lump Alabama in with Florida or Tennessee is to deny reality.
If Dooley is given the opportunity, he will clean this mess up.

He really is a disgusting individual who sounds like he needed to have lived as a member of one of Crazy Horse's war parties. I have a feeling one or more of Basilio's advertisers complained about this cold bloodied little punk!

I am currently texting with Alex. He cannot tell every detail, but what I have picked up from him is that Tony may have caught him having backroom negotiations with a competing station Tony hates, and has been feeding them bits of info from Tony's sources he introduced Alex to for sometime.
Something about email monitoring. Not sure. If I get more, I'll post it.

if you think the police in little podunk college towns treat the players the same as those in cities. Tusculoser popo give them a ride home vs. kicking their ass for good or no good reasons.

If you were a fan of Dave Hooker, which I'm not, you would want to root for Alex to join Hooker on his new 100.3 show. He would be much better about playing along with Hookers goofy games than Strange,Adams, or Griffin. Both are like 12 year olds with microphones(i stole that one from someone in here) except AA's a Vol fan while the Hook is not a fan. Only a fan of the Cowboys.
