When we lived in New Orleans, we had Schwegman's which was seldom a pleasant grocery store to visit, but which had the redeeming feature of having house brands for booze. Schwegmann's name was on generic rum, vodka, etc.

Not really drinkable, but definitely ok for cooking and for marinating.

I'm trying some recipes that use rum soaked raisins and need cheap rum. It's just a waste to heat up Bacardi to soak raisins. Are there any supermarket chains in or near Tennessee that have their own "house brands" at prices well below the name brands?

not rum and wont help your current search, but I've got a litre of V.O.B. bouron in my kitchen 365 days a year for marinating. Tennessee's finest $9 bourbon lol. rotgut shit you couldn't pay me to drink but makes one kick ass marinade.

My dad loved that stuff. We used to call it Very Old Headache. Great for giving you stomach ulcers, peeling paint, and migraines. also damn fine for making a glazed ham and (like you said) marinades.

Rum is cheap, even the premiums, as compared to bourbons or whiskies....so why seek out rotgut when the good stuff is already pretty cheap?

My favorite rum...not the cheapest nor the most expensive...is Gosling's Black Seal.

Can’t buy booze in a grocery store in TN, but I obtained a grant and conducted a 30 year study and Bobs in Knoxville has the absolute best prices…others tell me they can’t buy crown for I get it for at Bobs…

I have cooked with Meyers (or maybe spelled Myers) rum before. Pretty cheap stuff.

hehe, one of my knoxville buddies drinks that crap and he loves it. i dont drink bourbon/wisky/scotch so i can only criticize it so much. i was skeptical to use it as a marinade the first time in fear of how bad it was and would screw up the food. i was wrong, it's great for cookin hehe!!! my current bottle has enough left for one more good grill session then im out until i reload.
