Neat feature in ESPN WC magazine about strange but true WC stories, done in horror comic book style. Our own englishvol will probably know about this one. Didn't know this, but one of England's goals in the title game hit the crossbar and riccocheted straight down. It was unclear if the ball landed as a goal or outside the goal line. But the linesman who was from Azerbaijan (at the time part of the Soviet Union) immediately signalled goal after talking with the ref. When he died, British people laid flowers at his gravesite in Azerbaijan.

This incident is mentioned in this list (#2 on the list of most controversial WC goals). The controversial goal was scored by the great Geoff Hurst.

Of course, video of this incident is on You Tube. Actually looks like it landed inside the goal.
