View Full Version : Just rewatched last years UCLA game

I had forgotten how bad Crompton was. I had also forgotten that Fulmer came out for the 2nd half and told the sidelines reorter that Crompton didn't really play all that bad. :tissue: As bad as JC was the real killer was the first drive of the second half. We are up 14-7, got the ball 1st and 10 on the 6 yard line, and Foster fumbles. If we take it in there, we probably win. UCLA had just given up a pick 6 at the end of the 1st half (really stupid call by Neuheisel), and I think had we taken it in there, it would have broken UCLA's spirit.
JC was awful in the first half, he was atrocious in the second half. Craft was awful in the first half (4 picks) and then Chavis by giving their receivers 10 yards cushion made him look like Johnny U in the 2nd half.

First score of the game

Didn't realize that. For some reason I thought we scored first.
Only offensive highlight as I recall was Hardesty's TD run where he showed a real burst.

I'll never forget walking out of the Rose Bowl when Neuheisel took the mike and addressed the fans. You would've thought that they just won the national championship.
A bunch of people were razzing me about it, and I told one guy to mark my words, the season would bear out that there wouldn't be much to brag about beating that UT team that was on the field that night. It tied Spurrier/Duke beating UT as the worst UT game I've ever been to.

STUPID loss. It's one thing to get beat, another to just give away a victory
with idiotic coaching and lame play on the field. UT had to work to lose that game---and then did it again against auburn. Oh, my. Foster always saved his fumbles for moments when they'd be disasterous!:cowb:

it was this game that was the beginning of the end for Lard. IMO when he lost this game and the manner in which he lost it, it was like he took a big fuggin pin and poked a hole in the balloon for UT's season.
It was one of the biggest signature Steamers the Octopotomous had ever left at the 50 yard line, packed with all the hallmarks of a Flummo face plant. What ever remote optimism any Vol fan may have had going into the new season with the new coaches was flushed downe the toilets at the Rose Bowl that evening. A command performance by Boxcar Philly and Taco Boy if there ever was one!

That is exactly correct. OM had a banner day the evening of that game, and many sheep lost their way. It was a time of mass confusion and disbelief, and many Vol fans couldnt recover from what they had plainly seen on the tube. It exposed Fulmer for the moron he is, and was a landmark day for Tennesee fans whether they realized it or not.

a couple of us thought UCLA would win. And, if UCLA won we knew we had a great opportunity for the the staff to change. Knowing how much Fulmer sucked and our previous west coast game I predicted that we'd lose. If Foster hadn't fulmbled we would've won that game and we'd still be raising hell that Fulmer was the coach.

G, the one thing i remeber about the after party, was all the Sunshine Blowers on Volscat (which btw, wtf have they gone? seriously, it's like Volwhorio and 1-2 other but RoadWhoare has disappeared!) but after the game tons of Sunshine Pumpers were right behind every negative post with "hey, we'll be alright, i still expoect to win all the rest of them, Crompton, just had a bad game, I trust Fulmer, you think you can coach bettert han him?, i think Clawson will do great things, Fulmer is a legend we'll be ok, on and on and on ......I'm a true university of Fulmer fan, are you?"

If we hadn't lost that game, would Fulmer have been fired??

a game that we were favored to win and the schedule was set up that we'd have a losing record most of the year. Without that loss he probably would've retained his job by beating the back loaded patsies that we play every year. Of course the team mailed it in and Wyoming took care of that possibilty.

Yep, and everybody who tries to claim that Chavis did a great job last year needs to rewatch that game and then say that again with a straight face. Chavis did a good job in the first half, called his bookie at halftime and bet the house on UCLA, and then went out and gave the game away in the second half. Here's betting that he will do the same thing at LSU until they fire his ass.

Or consider this - had UCLA not turned out to be beyond horrible would Fulmer have been able to argue that he lost a close game to a quality opponent? IMO the thing that really killed Fulmer was the fact that he not only lost, he lost to a team that for the rest of the season would have been hard-pressed to beat Our Lady of the Blind.

Yes seeing UCLA getting hammered by BYU 59-0 the next week did not make things any better.

There was a guy on this board named "sunshine pumper" who argued with me that no way UCLA could beat us. He kinda disappeared..whatever happened to him?

Honestly I doubt it. If we win that game I doubt Hammy has the stones to make a mid-season change. Without a firing after the USC game we win our last 3 and would have finished 7-5, just enough to buy himself another season. Hell, if we won our bowl game under that scenario Phildo would have gotten a one year extension and raise.

that game was recently shown on espn classic. espn's definition of a classic is much different from mine. when the game went into overtime, i thought we would win. large phillip always won the ot games. most of them shouldn't have been in overtime but he did win them. that game was indeed the begining of the end for him. i wanted to win, but the loss did have its bright side.

I have to wonder if Chavis wasn't getting his orders to play soft from the head man--it fits with what we know about Fulmer. I think Chavis will have a great defense at LSU with all of that talent. I know, I know, the knock on him is that he needs talent to be a good coach. Who doesn't? He was far from the biggest problem on the UT coaching staff.

You could be right that the 3rd-and-long thing was a Fulmer preference as much as it was a Chavis preference. However, that was only part of the problem with Chavis when he was here. IMO, it wasn't nearly as bad as his reputation for being intolerant of fellow assistants who were enthusiastic, who were well-liked by the players, and who were excellent recruiters. Did he also have a problem with them because they were black? I don't know but the last two great recruiters he helped push out of Knoxville were obviously black. On top of that Chavis supposedly would do little or no recruiting himself and actually turned down top recruits handed to him on a silver platter if they were landed by one of the other assistants he disliked. In short, Chavis is the anti-recruiter and that affects more than just defensive recruits which goes back to the talent issue you raised. I just don't see Miles tolerating Chavis for long if he brings the same attitude to LSU.

To be fair:
I never heard of Chavis having any problems w/ Slade, or Kevin Ramsay, or Lovie Smith, or any other black asst coach other than Trooper & Garner. I think a little more evidence would be prudent before asking that question, as the question itself always carries with it a certain amount of accusation.
I'm not trying to defend him necesarilly, I just think the whole racism thing is questioned to the point of making it virtually incoherent.

That's a fair criticism Zippy. It's true that he seemed to get along with black assistants that weren't go-getters like Garner and Trooper so the anti-black thing may be invalid. It has been raised by others which is why I alluded to it. But just because it has been raised by others doesn't make it so and racism charges are made way too often.

I think it was less racial discord and more because of this.

Exactly. Take a look at Chavis. The guy is about 150 lbs overweight. Hard to be a go-getter like that, you just won't have the energy.
