Defense obviously won during scrimmage work yesterday. CLK noted that the defense put in some new wrinkles and guess what, no Ruff Tuff highlights to be found!

Monte's mayhem

After seeing the offense make a good showing in Tuesday's practice, Tennessee defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin added some new wrinkles Thursday that tipped the scales the other way.

“I thought the defense had a great day, I really did,” head coach Lane Kiffin said. “We put in some new fronts that gave the offense some problems. We moved some guys around on the offensive line and they (defenders) really got after us.”
In defense of the offense, most of the situational scrimmaging featured difficult down-and-distance situations.

“We did a lot of long third-down work,” Lane Kiffin said. “It was third-and-6, 8 and 10 work, and I thought the defense played well. The offense needs to come out Saturday (in full-scale scrimmage No. 2) and have a big day.”

After watching Vol running backs lose fumbles on the final two possessions of last Saturday's scrimmage, the head man is hoping to see improvement in that area in this weekend's game simulation.

“The No. 1 thing always when we come out here is to protect the ball,” Kiffin said. “The last thing we ever want to do is turn it over. More important than anything we do in the program is taking care of it. That was disappointing to have some turnovers, especially (last) Saturday.”

Thursday's practice highlights included:

- Nick Stephens showed a lot more zip and accuracy on his throws than he did Tuesday, his first day of full-speed work after recovering from a fractured right wrist. Stephens did not participate in a throwing-on-the-run drill, however.

- Sophomore tailback Tauren Poole, beaten by rising senior linebacker Rico McCoy on a blitz pickup drill, vented his frustration by roaring like a lion. McCoy has moved from weak side to strong side this spring, so he'll get more blitz opportunities.

- Junior defensive end Gerald Williams raced into the backfield on a pass rush and leaped so high that he batted down the throw with his elbow.

- After struggling with deep out routes in an earlier drill, Stephens found Gerald Jones with a 20-yard strike on that very route in full-speed 11-on-11 work.

- Moments after getting raves from running backs coach Eddie Gran for his route-running, senior tailback Montario Hardesty dropped a seven-yard would-be touchdown pass from Stephens.

- Austin Rogers made a dandy sliding catch of a 20-yard pass from sophomore B. J. Coleman.

- COLEMAN fired a laser-like strike to Gerald Jones for a 7-yard touchdown.

- Spring phenom Quintin Hancock made a spectacular diving catch of a 20-yard pass from Jonathan Crompton.

- Crompton completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Warren.

- McCoy made a diving deflection of a quick-out pass.

- Brandon Warren (6-1 and 218 pounds) appeared to get away with a push-off of cornerback Marsalous Johnson (5-9 and 184) a split second before reeling in a 40-yard touchdown pass.

WHO'S NUMBER ONE?

With senior tackle Wes Brown dinged up, mid-term freshman Montori Hughes got a lot of work with the first-team defense. Hughes played the tackle opposite senior Dan Williams. Other members of Thursday's No. 1 defense were: Ben Martin and Chris Walker at end, Rico McCoy, Herman Lathers and LaMarcus Thompson at linebacker, Stephaun Raines and C. J. Fleming at cornerback, Eric Berry and Art Evans at safety. Walk-on Minor Bowens, a 6-3, 293-pound transfer from Tennessee State, got a few snaps with the No. 1 defense at tackle. The second-team D-line consisted of Andre Mathis and Chase Nelson at tackle, Gerald Williams and Steven Fowlkes at end.

I ask you... why is every catch from a Crompton throw a "diving" catch?

IV, those receivers are charter members of a new national organization called Save The Earth Worms!

I've been wondering why almost all of the reports on QB play so far have been positive. The defense starts getting into a rythm, and suddenly JC doesn't shine. I'll still stick with Stephens as my bet for starter come Sept.

How long since we've been able to say that! It sure beats the hell out of Chavy saying, "We told the corners not to line up 25 yds. deep on the 3rd-and-8. We'll watch film and get that corrected."

A true classic from the mouth of the Beef Chavez! I am really looking forward to seeing LSU playing in a tight ball game in the fourth quarter. Obviously the fear of getting beat deep was paramount, but was it the Beef or was it BHP(Buffalo Hind Part)?

Wagee, from reading yours and others reports I can't help but get the impression that the players are having a blast. This despite all the talk about how much tougher CLK and Co. have made things for them (e.g. the Loafer Cams). The point being that people who enjoy their work will almost always do it better than if they don't enjoy it. If it's fun it isn't work; people will gladly give their best effort because that effort is rewarded with more pleasure. It just goes to show that demanding excellence is a pretty smart thing to do. Of course there's more to demanding excellence than simply screaming and yelling. You have to make it possible for the workers/players to achieve excellence by providing them the tools and the knowledge necessary to accomplish their tasks. And of course the management has to be truly excited about it themselves. Too bad the previous staff failed to realize this basic fact of life.

Guys, theres no reason to be after Crompy anymore. Foolmer is gone. Crompy wont be handed the starting job like he did last season.

No one had disliked Crompy more over the years than I have, but lets give the kid a 2nd chance. If he wins the job this year then he has EARNED it rather than it being given to him.

Jonathan Crompton was less accurate and didn't take care of the ball. It wasn't much better for B.J. Coleman, either.

I think this was a direct result of Monte Kiffin putting in some new stuff. You have to admit that one of Ruff Tuff's biggest problems has been an inability to read and react to changes in the defenses. We will see how it goes tomorrow, but I'm leaning toward putting my hopes now on Nick Stephens.

I've always thought that until we get THE GUY recruited at QB, Nick Stephens will be the guy. I like his competitiveness, his fire, his big arm.

It's fortunate that he is so young that he can heal so quickly and get back to competing. An injury like that would have me sidelined for 6 months or more.

I believe he will close the gap before the end of Spring and then win the job in the fall.

Maybe that's how Crompton looked so good last year in practice. Maybe swap between that and 2 minute drill, 4th quarter comeback days.

I agree. He's clearly playing better than BJ, and will likely be the guy, unless Nick catches fire. I wouldn't be shocked if Coleman transfers out after this spring.
