First off, I've never been hunting, barely been fishing, but I like dogs. What kind of hunting dogs do you have and why?

I don't own any dogs but when I was growing up, my uncles had coon dogs. They had redbones, walkers, black and tans, blue ticks, plotts, and mountain curs. They are smart dogs with a keen smell. They mostly just want to eat and hunt and are not terribly playful. On the other hand they seem OK being around people just don't expect them to be a lapdog.

I have often wondered about people that get bluetick hounds as pets. Those dogs are much happier if they can do what they were bred to do and that is hunt.

Yellow lab-She's 10 years old now, so I don't hunt her anymore but I originally bought her as a duck dog. My wife and kids have spoiled her and she has morphed into a great family dog. Labs are just about the ideal family pet. They love kids and are generally as gentle a breed as you will find. The only problem is that they will eat just about anything and chew the dickins out of all sorts of stuff as puppies. If you are thinking about getting a dog, you can't do better than a lab.

Yeah we had a black lab growing up that was prolly one of the best dogs ever! :) Also had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever for a short time, that thing would retrieve anything from anywhere (think clothes, and neighbor's garage). Then we got a letter saying he would be dealt with if we didn't do something, off to the farm with him.

I have a labradoodle now (allergies), still a pup so very trying at times.

no hunting dogs now, but have owned Irish & English Setters, Pointers, Brittany Spaniels, and Labs. My stepfather runs around in the mountain with a beautiful pair of solid liver german shorthairs. Beautiful dogs.

This is Bailey. She passed away last May, and was nearly 16 y.o. I never hunted with her but she was a natural pointer and loved to sneak-up on and chase birds. I got her when I was a student at UT because I wanted a smaller dog for apartment living but didn't want a yippy toy dog. She was a great dog. Smart, loving and obedient with a lot of personality. I would recommend a Brittany to anyone. The only consideration is that they require daily activity or they get restless/destructive when they're young. I took her to a local park nearly every day of her life. I miss our little walks alot.

Bonified quail finding machines! We obviously keep them kenneled, but have a golden as the family dog. Great pet.

...we had to put our girl to sleep two years ago and it still hurts. Never hunted rabbits but she learned to sneak up on squirrels from the cat next door. Now we have the humane society version of a springer spaniel -- possibly world's goofiest dog but he's a sweet dog.

I've had two beagles in my life and I'm partial. Will have another one if we ever get over our last one.

We have an adopted rat terrier, with a touch of sooner hound (sooner pee on the carpet than outside if you yell at her), and a little bit of Mississippi leg hound in her too. All in all she's a very sweet dog as long as we exercise her frequently.
