So far we have heard about what Derek has learned from Vince and Saban which is a quite impressive duo to learn from. However, his coach at UVA, George Welsh, IMHO is one of the most under-rated coaches in college football history.
Welsh was an All-American qb at Navy in the early 50s and coach at the academy during the 70s. He compiled a 55-46-1 record at the Naval Academy which is pretty amazing considering the tough schedule and the rigorous academic requirements.
In the early 80s he moved to UVA which had exactly TWO winning seasons in the previous 29 and had NEVER been to a bowl. He turned the Cavaliers into a competitive force capped b y his best team, the 90 UVA team we barely beat in the Sugar Bowl.
I am sure the lessons learned by the walk-on Derek from Welsh have also helped form his coaching philosophy.
