View Full Version : It will take a full generation to wash Fulmer out of the program..

What's really gonna suck is that everytime we lose a game or make a boneheaded play we're gonna have to hear it from the foolmer worshippers. They'll make up all kinds of stories about how a foolmer coached team never done anything like that, how they were so disciplined, etc.

Hopefully by the time our children are of age to really follow UT Football they wont know much about foolmer.

The question is, what will you tell em when they ask?

I think it's going to be hard to make an argument based on "competence" since the 2008 and 2005 seasons are still so fresh in our memories.

I think they'll take more selective shots, like so:

"See - not even the great Monte Kiffin can stop Florida either" [said after 1 loss and repeated monotonously thereafter for a year]
"Hey remember that Chavis had the #4 defense in the country"
"Running up the score like that is low class, Fulmer had more class"
"Anybody can hire mercenaries"
"I don't care, I still wish we had more Tennessee Men in the program"

I will tell them Fulmer did less with more than any coach in the history of football. All he had to do was beat one team for a ten year period and couldn't do it.

I'll also tell them Fulmer is the cause for my most humbling expierence in my football life. Sitting in the Liberty Bowl getting beat by Memphis.

No it will not. He was not that important, he is gone, and I do not understand the need to regurgitate him every day. Fook him, new coach, program on the upswing....and I could give a rats ass was some Fulmer shithead may say in the future. If and when they say anything, just remind them he is fired and no longer the coach.

I predict that Kiffin and Co. will wash the Fulmer stink out of the program. A couple of generations from now there will be a trivia question about the '98 Championship and most folks will think Kiffin even won that one. One broadcaster will turn to the other and say "No, no, it was actually Fulmer," to which the other will reply chuckling, "Well, even a blind pig finds a truffle once in a while."

I think that's a pretty accurate list. Also look for them to nitpick on the least little thing (secondary violations, player missing a class) when they completely overlooked all of that before.

Well, the other side to this coin is Fulmer himself. Provided he is ever hired again at a decent institution you will hear from his worshippers here should he have any success. Of course, given what we all know over here his likely poor-to mediocre performance at a new school should shut them up.

Then again, the last statement would mean his supporters are even remotely intellectually honest. Which of course they ain't.

Winning solves virtually all ills. If CLK starts winning early then Fulmer and his disciples will quickly fade away. However, I would argue that mere (but obvious) improvement in areas that clearly needed improvement will go a long way. Special teams play, personnel decisions, effort, sideline decorum, and yes - play selection should improve immediately. I think people will recognize where talent leaves off and coaching picks up. Think back to when Johnny Majors came here. The talent was down and we lost a lot of games to teams with better (store-bought in the case of Bama and UF) talent. But it was obvious to everyone I knew that we were definitely better-off coaching-wise.

Nope - 2 years - even one year.. Kiffin is following the model used a tOSU - wit the "BEAT FLORIDA" quote..

tOSU has owned Michigan since they made the coaching change - won a number of Big 10 championships - BCS bowl game appearances - and a national championship - knocking off a Miami team, defending and undefeated Miami..

Lots of historically powerhouse programs - like Oklahoma, Southern Cal, Texas, tOSU, LSU, Alabama came right out of the gate with their new coaches and did well - nothing less should be expected out of Kiffin and his staff

I think you'll see an improvement of the quality of the product just because it'll be different than what everyone is used to seeing in the Tennessee product, and the predictability won't be there. Then, as the talent is restored, you'll see the transformation really begin to take shape, probably around year 3 or so.

Someone asked me about the number of Vol fans who were in Lane Kiffin's court. I told him that I would guess about 85%. That leaves about 15% still wishing Fulmer was still the HC. I'm basing my guess on what I see on other boards.

My wild guess is that maybe 1% are neither Fulmer nor Kiffin fans. They wanted Fulmer gone but wanted someone other than Kiffin to replace him. Another loud group of anti-CLK people are not UT fans at all but rather are fans of major rivals like Farteluu the Bammer or are media types like Slimebaum who understand that any kind of controversy can be good for business.

Humble, we're considerably behind FU in talent. I don't see Kiffin coming in taking an ownership type of domination over FU in just 2 years unless Urban bolts for ND. That said, I am saying that I disagree that Fulmer is washed from the program in two years or less. The landscape is different for Kiffin in the SEC looking up at Bama, FU and UGAly and holding a recruiting handicap. As long as we are still tripping up in one of those games, the Fulmeristas will be saying that Phil would have won that game... :ura1:
